Lonely Peryton

The Peryton

The Peryton

A brewing jealousy
Of his winged brethren
The Peryton festers
Angry at the noble griffin
And the pretty pegasus
Whispering hate
At the beloved dragon
Even the harpies
Get a little love

His antlers tear
At his mountain cave
His feathers molt again
Why don’t humans know him?
Is he not beautiful?
A beast of stag and condor
Only survivor of Atlantis
Born with the shadow of a man
Until it takes a life

The Peryton watches
Forlornly at the world
Confused and angry
Attacking any that come close
Yet no one spreads his name
Trapped in obscurity
This mystic beast takes flight
Forever ignored

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

  1. Great line, “even the Harpies get a little love.” I am glad you also take some responsibility in spreading the name of the Paryton.

  2. This is just awesome Charles. I have never heard of this creature, How foresty with the stag and the bird.

  3. There are really a lot of mythical creatures that go unnoticed. But, that should be motivating to authors. You don’t have to write about vampires, werewolves, elves, or dwarfs to be a good fantasy author. There are plenty of awesome mythical creatures (not to mention those you could create) just waiting to be painted into your fiction books.

    • I like using the classics with the unique ones. For some reason, it helps the odd ones meld with the world if seen interacting with elves and the like. That combination of comfort and newness, I guess.
