Writing Prompt: Sports Story: “Swinger”

I was called “Swinger” long before I knew anything at all about sex.  See, I would swing at anything. Girls’ softball, 1974.  Pitcher would throw and I would swing.  I had the lead for how many strikeouts the team had during any game we played.  The only reason I was on the team is that I could run like the wind, catch, and throw a good ball.  But hit one, never.  Bases were loaded and “Swinger” was up at bat.  We were down 0-3.  Crack!  I made contact!  Almost forgot to run.  Outfield fly. Dropped and dropped again.  I was going to make it home.  The ball whizzing behind me in the air. “Slide!!!” I heard. I did, on twisted legs, and found home plate, before the catcher. “Safe!”  I was “Swinger”, the new hero.  Never managed to do that again.  It was a fluke!  But it sure felt good for a week.

About S.K. Nicholls

is a steel magnolia from GA who currently resides with her rocket scientist husband in Central Florida. Even though she had a reputation as the class clown in grade school, she managed to successfully achieve a career in nursing that spanned thirty-five years. Putting down the stethoscope and picking up the pen, she started writing compelling, thought-provoking historic novels and riveting contemporary crime romps, telling it like it was and telling it like it is. Orphaned from her mother at an early age, she survived foster care, and in her youth resided in an orphanage in the North GA Mountains, the Ethel Harpst Home. Four adults call her mom and four little people call her grandmother. She enjoys reading, comedy shows, salt-water fishing, boating, and brewing Kombucha. Her family owns and operates one of the oldest and largest nudist resorts in the nation located in Florida, Cypress Cove.

  1. Once a hero, always a hero!

  2. Sounds like me and soccer. Whiffed a kick two feet from an open goal. I was terrible.

  3. Good for you! I was terrible at sports – terrified of the ball hitting my head!

  4. Glory to the swinger:D
