Week Prompt is as Week Prompt Does

The Community Story Board Prompt for this week is Angst or Longing. The following is my poor attempt at interpreting what I consider to be the spirit of the prompt which was thoughtfully created up by the totally brilliant (and mechanistic) Ionia Martin. You can visit her at ioniamartin to see how brilliant. Most of the artists on Community Story Board have done a poem that demonstrates angst and longing very well. I am doing a little something different. So here it is:

Angst and Longing by John W. Howell ©2013

“Good morning Angst and Longing. How may I direct your call?”

“I would like to speak to Mr. Angst please.”

“I’m sorry but Mr. Angst is in a meeting. Is there anyone else who can help you?”

“Angst was the one who handled my wife’s divorce. I don’t think anyone else will have the information to help.”

“Can I take a message for Mr. Angst then?”

“How about Mr. Longing. Is he available?”

“I’m sorry he is also in a meeting.”

“Probably with Angst.”

“I am not at liberty to discuss the partner affairs.”

“That was just a comment. Call it facetious if you will.”

“I am not sure Facetious works here.”

“Never mind. Please take a message for Mr. Angst.”

“Yes sir. What would like Mr. Angst to know?”

“Well let’s start with I have no more money.”

“Yes sir, no money.”

“I am being foreclosed on my house and business.”

“Yes sir, foreclosure.”

“I am thinking of getting a new gun.”

“Yes sir, new gun.”

“And I am going to go to the Grand Canyon.”

“Yes sir, Grand canyon.”

“I am going to get a pack of cigarettes and a bottle of Tanqueray gin.”

“Yes sir, cigarettes and gin.”

“I am going to light up a cigarette and pour some gin on the rocks.”

“Yes sir, Smoke and drink.”

“When I am finished with the cigarette and gin I’m going to take the gun and blow my fucking brains out.”

“Yes sir, blow out your uh. . . brains. Is there anything else?”

“Naw just make sure he gets the message.”

“Of course sir. Have a nice day and thank you for calling Angst and Longing.”

About John W. Howell

I have been working in business for over forty years and now have the time to work in special areas of interest. My passion has always been to create compelling stories of fiction. I have authored two novels and am working on my third. The first novel is still in manuscript form and being utilized as a door stop in the laundry room. The second is a contemporary fiction novel of 89,000 words and is complete and I am currently seeking a publisher. I also write poetry but have not had the guts to share any with anyone. The one time I read a piece to a person their only comment was, “it doesn’t rhyme.” I will continue to write and hopefully my blog, Fiction Favorites at www.johnwhowell.com will provide some entertainment and an interesting thought or two. I live by the Gulf of Mexico with my wife Molly and an assortment of loving pets.
