Yesterday, Before…. for Yesterday Prompt

English: Pulloxhill: The War Memorial The War ...

English: Pulloxhill: The War Memorial The War Memorial is in this quiet location in the wooded graveyard of 871581 and the wreaths look as if they were only laid yesterday. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Yesterday, before the battle
So many youthful hearts blazed
Yesterday, into the future’s mirror
They bravely gazed
Yesterday, before the carnage
Honour in every heart
Yesterday, it was a strategy
In which they all could play their part

Yesterday, before the bloodshed
Such naïve bravery was displayed
Yesterday, when they were innocent
Before tragic moments of dismay
Yesterday, before the truth of it
Had risen on the breeze
Yesterday, before we realised
No gods were here appeased

Yesterday, before the war began
There was hope and glory born
Yesterday, before the eyes of all
Their fealty so sworn
Yesterday, before the end of it
It could still be that god had smiled
Yesterday, when every mother here
Still could pray for her dear child

Yesterday, before the end of it
So many songs were sung
Yesterday, before the brutal end
And all its misery had begun

Like most people, I have a number of sides to me. The most interesting one probably emerges through my writing, hence this blog. I love to read, and also to write, and so this is a way to share both.

  1. Beautiful although sad. What a clever interpretation of the theme – I imagine that there are a lot of people who were wishing that they could go back to ‘yesterday’ in those days.

    • Yes, I must admit it just came to me as I wrote it, I just had this idea of the first words being ‘yesterday, before…’ and then the war idea and the regret and loss occurred and it flowed out relatively quickly from there. Thanks so much!! 🙂 🙂

  2. Pulling at the heartstrings with this.

  3. A beautiful piece, seemless 🙂

  4. So lovely and moving, Helen.
