Holiday Havoc

A joint poem written by Ionia, Trey, and Charles.

Fall is here, a time for cheer
When we gather loved ones near
And put aside all of our fears…

Except the ones Black Friday brings
Like sales on toasters and diamond rings
The ps4, the hottest toys,
Pushing your way past girls and boys

YouTube videos of chaos afar
Advertisements of bow – laden cars
Waiting in line for just right gift
Dead battery in the car park
Now begging for a lift.

Finally at home we unpack our haul
Find some good hiding spots for those who aren’t tall

We all settle down with Seagram’s and Nog
Before the crackling fire, we all swill our grog

While grandpa nods off before the TV
Everyone is excited their hearts full of glee

Frosty the Snowman and mean old Scrooge too
Traditional Christmas shows we’ve watched since we were two

We watch both of those as the fire warms our toes
And the one about an eight point buck with the alcoholic nose

“Untangle these” is my wife’s gentle plea
We point at the kids and say “Don’t look at me…”

The lights are all messed
A yearly pain in the arse test
I cheated this time
Apparently hanging them bunched is a crime

I stand on the roof and glance around
Something is strange in my town
No houses have lights
Or decorations blindly bright

A realization at my core
Makes me rush to the door
Checking the calendar secures my fear
Only Hanukkah is here

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.
