The Old Guard – A Poem

The Old Guard

He left
thinking
life held more
and lived a long time
waiting for
that more.

She let go
hoping
life held more
and lived a long time
wondering
exactly
what that more was.

They tenderly guard
the other side
out of respect
for either side.
That’s just the way they are
now
more or less.
